The right natural stone for a Mauritian home is the one matched to its spot: granite for kitchens and driveways, marble for indoor floors and walls, sandstone and limestone for terraces and pool decks, and cobbles and pebbles for gardens and paths. Choose by the job the stone has to do, then by colour.
Natural stone lasts for generations, but only when it suits where it is laid. A polished marble that looks perfect in a showroom can become slippery beside a pool. A porous sandstone left unsealed can stain on a shaded terrace that never fully dries. Island life adds its own tests: strong sun, high humidity, salty sea air and heavy summer rain.
This guide walks you through every type of stone we supply in Mauritius, what each one is good at, where it struggles, which finish to choose, and how to care for it. By the end you will know exactly what to ask for, whether you are fitting one kitchen worktop or paving a whole hotel garden.
Why natural stone suits Mauritius
Natural stone handles a tropical island climate better than most manufactured surfaces, because it does not fade, warp or rot. The key is knowing which climate pressures your project faces.
- Strong sun and UV. Stone colour is part of the rock, so it does not bleach the way painted, printed or plastic finishes can. Light-coloured stones also stay cooler underfoot on open terraces.
- High humidity. Dense stones such as granite absorb very little moisture. More porous stones such as sandstone and some limestones need sealing so damp does not lead to dark patches or algae in shaded corners.
- Salt air near the coast. Homes and hotels close to the sea need stone that resists salt crystallisation. Dense granite and well-sealed limestone are the safest choices for coastal facades and pool surrounds.
- Heavy summer rain and cyclones. Outdoor stone needs a textured, slip-resistant finish and proper drainage falls. Natural stone is heavy and stays put in high winds, which makes it ideal for paving and walling.
- Barefoot living. Pool decks, verandas and bathrooms are walked on with wet feet, so grip matters as much as looks.
Keep these five points in mind as you read the stone types below. Each one answers them differently.
The four main types of natural stone
Granite: the hardest-working stone
Granite is an igneous rock formed from cooled magma, which makes it extremely hard, dense and resistant to scratches, heat and stains. It is the best all-round choice for kitchen worktops, busy floors, staircases, driveways and exterior cladding.
Very hard, low water absorption, handles hot pans and heavy traffic, stays good-looking outdoors for decades.
Heavy, so large slabs need proper support. A few light varieties benefit from sealing.
Absolute Black, Black Galaxy, Steel Grey, Tan Brown, Kashmir White, Imperial Red and Silky Black, which comes from our own quarry.

Marble: timeless elegance for interiors
Marble is a metamorphic rock made mostly of calcite. It gives the soft veining and glow that no other surface can copy, which is why it is chosen for living room floors, feature walls, bathrooms and vanities.
Unmatched beauty, takes a high polish, stays cool underfoot, adds value to a home.
Softer than granite, and acids such as lemon juice, vinegar and some cleaners can dull its surface. Better suited to bathrooms and living areas than to busy kitchen worktops.
Makrana White, Polished Calacatta, Morwad White, Banswara White, Ambaji White, Rainforest Green and Rainforest Brown.

Sandstone: warm, natural texture for outdoor living
Sandstone is a sedimentary rock made of compressed sand grains. Its naturally grippy surface and warm earthy colours make it a favourite for patios, garden paths, pool decks and wall cladding.
Naturally slip-resistant, stays comfortable in the sun, every slab has its own pattern.
More porous than granite, so it should be sealed, especially in shaded or damp areas, to prevent staining and algae.
Kandla Grey, Rainbow, Teakwood, Autumn Brown, Dholpur Beige, Agra Red, Modak, Raj Green and Fossil Mint.

Limestone: tough, even-toned and practical
Limestone is a sedimentary rock that comes in calm, consistent tones. Dense Indian limestones such as Kota and Kadappa are known for their strength and are widely used for floors that take heavy daily wear.
Hard-wearing, uniform colour, good grip with a natural finish, good value for large areas.
Like marble, it reacts to acids, and it benefits from sealing in kitchens and outdoor areas.
Kota Blue, Kota Brown, Kota Honey, Kadappa Black, Tandur Yellow, Tandur Grey, Shahabad, Kurnool Grey and Jaisalmer Yellow.

Landscaping and finishing stone
Beyond slabs and tiles, natural stone shapes the whole outdoor space. These products finish driveways, gardens, pools and walls.
Cobbles
Cobbles, also called setts, are small blocks of granite, sandstone or limestone laid in patterns for driveways, garden paths and courtyards. They carry vehicle weight well, let rainwater drain between the joints and give a classic, hand-laid look. Browse granite, sandstone and limestone options on our cobbles supplier page.
Pebbles
Pebbles are naturally rounded stones used in garden beds, planters, water features, pathways and drainage areas. White and black marble pebbles create sharp contrast, while river and coloured pebbles give a softer, natural feel. See the full range on our pebbles supplier page.

Which stone for which space
Use this table as a starting point. It matches each part of a home or project to the stone and finish that perform best there.
| Space | Best stone | Recommended finish | Why it works |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kitchen worktop | Granite | Polished or honed | Resists heat, scratches and stains from daily cooking |
| Living and dining floors | Marble, granite or limestone | Polished or honed | Cool underfoot and elegant, with granite for the busiest rooms |
| Bathroom walls and vanity | Marble | Polished | Brings a luxury look where there is little heavy wear |
| Bathroom and shower floor | Granite or limestone | Honed or natural | Better grip when wet than a polished surface |
| Staircase | Granite | Honed or flamed edge | Takes constant foot traffic without wearing |
| Pool deck and pool coping | Sandstone, limestone or granite | Natural or flamed | Grippy for wet bare feet and stays cooler in the sun |
| Patio and veranda | Sandstone or limestone | Natural | Warm texture that suits outdoor living |
| Driveway | Granite or sandstone cobbles | Natural or flamed | Carries vehicle weight and lets water drain |
| Garden path | Stepping stones, cobbles or pebbles | Natural or tumbled | Blends with planting and drains well |
| Feature wall | Ledger panels, walling stone or mosaic linears | Split face or natural | Adds depth and texture to plain walls |
| Exterior facade | Granite or sandstone | Flamed or natural | Stands up to sun, rain and salt air |
A quick rule of thumb: polished finishes belong indoors where floors stay dry. Anywhere that gets wet, from showers to pool decks to driveways, needs a textured finish.
Stone finishes explained
The same stone can look and behave completely differently depending on how its surface is finished. Choosing the right finish is as important as choosing the stone itself.
- Polished: a glossy, mirror-like surface that brings out the colour and veining. Best for indoor floors, walls, worktops and vanities. Slippery when wet, so avoid it outdoors and in showers.
- Honed: a smooth, matt surface with no shine. It shows fewer scratches and gives a little more grip than polished, which makes it a good choice for bathrooms and busy floors.
- Natural: the stone as it splits from the block, with its own texture. Common for sandstone and limestone paving, and very slip-resistant outdoors.
- Flamed: a rough, slightly glittering texture made by heating granite. It gives excellent grip for pool decks, steps, driveways and facades.
- Tumbled: softened edges and an aged, rustic look, used for cobbles, pebbles and garden paving.

Caring for natural stone in a tropical climate
Natural stone needs very little maintenance, but a few simple habits keep it looking new in Mauritius's heat and humidity.
- Seal porous stone. Sandstone, limestone, marble and light granites benefit from a penetrating sealer after installation. Reseal outdoor areas every one to two years, or when water stops beading on the surface.
- Clean with pH-neutral products. Use warm water and a stone-safe cleaner. Avoid bleach, vinegar, lemon and strong acidic or alkaline cleaners, especially on marble and limestone.
- Wipe spills quickly. Oil, wine, coffee and citrus can mark lighter stones if left to soak in.
- Keep outdoor stone free of algae. Shaded, damp areas can turn green during the rainy season. A soft brush and a stone-safe cleaner keep them clean, and good drainage stops water from sitting on the surface.
- Rinse coastal stone. Near the sea, an occasional rinse with fresh water removes salt deposits before they build up.
- Protect polished surfaces. Use mats at entrances to catch sand and grit, which can scratch polished marble over time.
With this care, natural stone easily outlasts the building it is part of.
How to order natural stone in Mauritius
Getting an accurate quote is quick when you send the right details. Here is what helps us most:
- The stone type or a photo. Name the variety you like, or send a picture of a stone you have seen. If it is not in our collection, our team can source it.

Frequently asked questions
What is the most durable natural stone for a home in Mauritius?
Granite is the most durable all-round stone. It is very hard, absorbs little water and handles heat, heavy traffic and sun, which makes it ideal for kitchens, floors, stairs and outdoor areas.
Is marble a good choice for a kitchen worktop?
Marble is beautiful but softer than granite, and acidic foods such as lemon and vinegar can dull it. For a busy family kitchen, granite is the more practical choice. Marble works best on bathroom vanities, feature walls and living room floors.
Which stone is best around a swimming pool?
Choose a stone with a natural or flamed finish for grip with wet feet. Sandstone, Kota limestone and flamed granite are all good options for pool decks and coping, and lighter colours stay cooler in the sun.
Does natural stone need sealing?
Porous stones such as sandstone, limestone and marble should be sealed, especially outdoors and in kitchens and bathrooms. Dense dark granites need little or no sealing.
Can you source a stone that is not on your website?
Yes. Send us a photo of the stone you want on WhatsApp and our team will source it, along with custom sizes and finishes.
Do you deliver across Mauritius?
Yes. We deliver natural stone across the island from our stone yard in Central Flacq. Share your project location when you ask for a quote and we will include delivery.
