For outdoor spaces in Mauritius, choose stone for grip, heat and drainage before colour: light sandstone or limestone with a natural finish for pool decks and patios, flamed granite for steps and coping, cobbles for driveways, and pebbles and stepping stones to finish the garden.
Outdoor stone works harder than anything inside your home. It sits in full tropical sun, takes heavy summer downpours, carries cars and garden furniture, and is walked on with wet bare feet around the pool. The right stone handles all of this for decades. The wrong one gets too hot to stand on, turns slippery after rain, or stains green in the shade.
This guide covers every outdoor area of a Mauritian home, villa or hotel: which stone to use, which finish, how thick it should be, how it should be laid, and how to keep it looking good through the rainy season. If you are choosing stone for indoors as well, start with our complete guide to natural stone in Mauritius.
Why outdoor stone needs different thinking
Indoors, stone is chosen mostly for looks. Outdoors, four practical tests come first, and the island climate makes each one stricter.
- Grip. Pool decks, steps and paths get wet from rain, sprinklers and swimmers. A textured surface is essential, so polished stone has no place outside.
- Heat underfoot. Dark stone in full sun can become uncomfortable for bare feet. Lighter colours reflect more sunlight and stay cooler.
- Drainage. Heavy rain in the summer and cyclone season needs somewhere to go. Paving must slope gently away from buildings, and joints or gravel areas help water soak away.
- Weather and salt. Near the coast, salt air and spray test every surface. Dense stones and properly sealed porous stones cope best.
Every recommendation below is based on these four tests.
Choosing stone for each outdoor area
Pool decks and pool coping
The pool area is where grip and heat matter most. People walk barefoot, the surface is often wet, and the deck sits in full sun for most of the day.
Light sandstone such as Kandla Grey or Dholpur Beige, Kota limestone, or flamed granite for the coping edge.
Natural or flamed. Never polished.
Choose a bullnose or rounded coping edge so the pool edge is comfortable to sit on and safe to grip.
See ready-made coping on our other products page and deck stones on our sandstone page.
Patios, terraces and verandas
These are your outdoor living rooms. They need a surface that feels warm and natural, stays comfortable in the sun and looks good next to planting and outdoor furniture.
Sandstone such as Teakwood, Rainbow, Autumn Brown or Kandla Grey, or Kota and Tandur limestone for a calmer, even tone.
Natural, or a lightly brushed finish for a softer feel.
Covered verandas stay drier, so you can choose a smoother finish there than on open terraces.

Driveways and courtyards
Driveways carry the weight of cars and delivery vehicles, so they need small, thick units that spread the load and let water drain between the joints.
Granite cobbles for the hardest wear, or sandstone and limestone cobbles for a warmer, heritage look.
Natural, tumbled or flamed.
Frame the driveway with a contrasting border, such as black granite cobbles around grey, to make it look finished and keep the edges straight.

Garden paths and stepping stones
Paths should feel part of the garden, not cut through it. Stepping stones set into lawn or gravel give a relaxed, natural look and let rain soak into the ground.
Stepping stones, sandstone paving or cobbles, with pebbles filling the gaps.
Natural or tumbled.
Space stepping stones to a comfortable walking stride, roughly 60 to 65 cm from the centre of one stone to the next.
Find stepping stones on our other products page.
Boundary walls, garden walls and feature walls
Stone walls give a garden structure and privacy, and they age beautifully. For feature walls on terraces or around the pool, cladding gives the look of solid stone with much less weight.
Walling stone for boundary and garden walls. Ledger panels, slate, quartzite or mosaic linears for feature walls.
Natural or split face for texture.
Light the wall from below at night. Textured stone looks dramatic with uplighting.
All of these are on our other products page.
Garden beds, planters and water features
Pebbles finish a garden. They cover soil, keep weeds down, help drainage and add colour around plants, pots and fountains.
White pebbles for bright contrast, black marble pebbles for a modern look, river and coloured pebbles for a natural feel.
Natural or polished pebbles.
Lay a weed-control membrane under the pebbles first, and use a depth of about 5 cm so the ground does not show through.
See every colour on our pebbles supplier page.
Outdoor stone at a glance
Use this table to compare stones for outdoor use. Grip ratings assume a natural or flamed finish.
| Stone | Grip when wet | Comfort in sun | Best outdoor uses |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sandstone | Very good | Good in light shades | Patios, pool decks, garden paths, wall cladding |
| Limestone (Kota, Tandur) | Very good | Good in light shades | Pool surrounds, verandas, heavy-use paving |
| Granite, flamed | Excellent | Good in light and grey shades | Steps, pool coping, driveways, coastal areas |
| Granite and sandstone cobbles | Very good | Depends on colour | Driveways, courtyards, path edging |
| Slate and quartzite | Good | Fair, darker shades warm up | Feature walls, stepping areas, facades |
| Pebbles | Not for walking surfaces | Not applicable | Garden beds, planters, water features, drainage |
Colour and heat: the lighter the stone, the cooler it stays. Keep black and dark stones for borders, steps and accents in sunny areas, and use lighter shades for large open decks.
Thickness and size guide
Thickness depends on what the stone has to carry. These are the typical choices for outdoor projects:
- Patios, terraces and paths (foot traffic only): paving around 20 to 30 mm thick, laid on a full concrete or mortar bed.
- Pool decks: 20 to 30 mm paving, with matching coping pieces for the pool edge.
- Driveways: cobbles or setts around 50 to 100 mm thick, laid on a compacted, well-drained base.
- Stepping stones: thicker pieces, usually 30 to 50 mm, so they sit firmly in lawn or gravel.
- Wall cladding and ledger panels: thinner, lighter pieces fixed to a solid wall with the right adhesive.

Laying outdoor stone that lasts
Most problems with outdoor stone come from what is underneath it. A good installer will take care of these points:
- A solid base. Paving needs a compacted sub-base and a full bed of mortar or concrete, with no hollow spots that can crack under weight.
- A gentle fall. Paving should slope slightly away from the house, around 1 cm for every 60 to 80 cm, so rain runs off instead of pooling.
- Drainage at the low points. Channel drains or gravel strips at the edge of large terraces and driveways stop water from building up in heavy rain.
- Proper joints. Leave even joints and fill them with a suitable exterior jointing compound so weeds and water stay out.
- Seal after laying. Porous stone should be cleaned and sealed once the joints have cured, before it faces its first rainy season.
Design ideas for Mauritian gardens
Natural stone looks its best when colours work together. A few combinations that suit tropical light and planting:
- Modern and calm: Kandla Grey sandstone with white pebbles and black granite edging.
- Warm and tropical: Teakwood or Autumn Brown sandstone with river pebbles and lush green planting.
- Resort style: pale Kota or Tandur limestone around the pool, with stone-clad feature walls and uplighting.
- Classic courtyard: grey granite cobbles in a fan pattern with a contrasting red or yellow cobble border.
- Natural garden: stepping stones through lawn, with mixed pebbles around plants and pots.

Outdoor stone care through the seasons
Outdoor stone needs little care, but timing it to the seasons keeps it looking new.
- Before the rainy season: sweep away leaves and debris, check that drains and joints are clear, and reseal porous stone if water no longer beads on the surface.
- During the rainy season: brush shaded areas regularly so algae cannot take hold, and clear standing water after heavy downpours.
- After a cyclone or storm: clear debris, rinse away mud and check that no paving has lifted where water ran underneath.
- In the dry season: give paving a wash with a stone-safe cleaner, and rinse coastal areas with fresh water to remove salt.
- Around the pool: rinse pool chemicals off the deck regularly, because chlorinated or salt water left to dry can mark some stones.
Avoid acid-based cleaners and high-pressure jets held close to the surface, especially on sandstone and limestone.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best stone for a pool deck in Mauritius?
A light-coloured stone with a natural or flamed finish is best. Kandla Grey sandstone, Kota limestone and flamed granite give good grip for wet bare feet, and lighter shades stay cooler in the sun.
Which stone stays cool in the sun?
Lighter colours absorb less heat, so pale sandstone, beige and grey limestone and light granite stay noticeably cooler underfoot than black stones. Use dark stones such as black granite for borders and accents rather than large sunny areas.
Can natural stone be used for a driveway?
Yes. Granite and sandstone cobbles are made for driveways because they carry vehicle weight and let water drain between the joints. Laid on a well-compacted base, they last for decades.
How do I stop outdoor stone from turning green?
Algae grows where water sits in the shade. Seal porous stone, make sure paving has a slight fall so rain runs off, and brush shaded areas with a stone-safe cleaner during the rainy season.
Is natural stone safe in cyclone season?
Natural stone is heavy and stays in place in strong winds, which makes it one of the most storm-resistant choices for paving and walls. Good drainage under the paving is the main thing to plan for heavy rain.
Do you supply stone for hotel and resort landscaping?
Yes. We supply pool coping, paving, cobbles, pebbles, walling stone and stepping stones for homes, villas, hotels and commercial projects across Mauritius.
